My Six Legislative Years in Review

Fulton Sheen

I consider it an honor and privilege to have represented the citizens of the 88th District as your state representative. I have attempted to represent my district in an honorable and responsible fashion. I have never engaged in negativity or simply taken politically correct innocuous positions. I have always voted yes or no, I have never passed on a vote. I think it is a travesty that elected officials are no longer chosen on the basis of issues or reputations, but have become a contest of who can more effectively trash the other.

While in the Michigan Legislature, I did all I could to cut spending, lower taxes, eliminate job killing and uncompetitive regulations, shrink the size and scope of government, stand for life and protect the Judeo-Christian family model. I have been on the House Tax Policy Committee all three terms. I was chosen as Chair in my second term because of my insight and understanding of Michigan’s taxation system, having been a financial planner for 20 years and the former Allegan County Treasurer. During that time I fought to eliminate the personal property tax and gross receipt tax which were embodied in the Single Business Tax and now the Michigan Business Tax. These taxes have nothing to do with making a profit. With all the exemptions and surcharges added over the years, they make Michigan’s business taxation system the most complicated, convoluted, uncompetitive, and difficult to adhere to in the nation.

introduced and championed the replacement of our current taxation system with a simple consumption tax called the Michigan Fair Tax. This would have eliminated the personal property tax, gross receipts tax, and Michigan Income Tax and replaced them with a tax on services and an additional 3.75 cent sales tax. After 12 years of elected office I look forward to returning to the private sector. I will be expanding my financial planning business and getting more involved in my faith-based disaster relief group. Additionally, I have been asked to offer some consultation on how to fix our taxation system, and will be entering into some new business ventures as well. If you would like to keep tabs on my activities, go to my personal website. Finally, let me thank you all one more time for your faith and support during my years of public service.

Take Care & God Bless,

Fulton Sheen
