Representative Fulton Sheen

Lord you wield great resources and provision at your command. You release and bestow them on whom you choose. The world’s systems have done all they can to maintain the balance of power, to protect themselves and play one against another. These are the intrigues of men. These things happen in the dark of the night with a cloak of secrecy. Men arrogantly believe that they are in control and that no eye sees them, no ear hears them, and no mind perceives what they do. They do not even consider that You are ever seeing, ever hearing, and that You not only perceive their minds, but You know their thoughts and the motivations of their hearts.

America has chosen their next president and the intrigues of men are in full swing. Even now the balance of power is shifting and decisions and actions are being made and taken. Lord too many of our citizens sit unaware and oblivious to what is going on in the earth. Insulated and consumed by trivial concerns of schedules, activities, entertainment, and the business of life, they neither care, nor perceive the times in which they are living.

Lord let us embrace, engage, and discern the moment, for there is a battle going on. Let us not take lightly what is transpiring all around us; let us not be unaware or complacent.

Freedom is not free. You paid a price to set us free from sin and darkness, just as a price is paid for the nations of the earth to retain their sovereignty. A people who are unwilling to fight for their freedom will be overcome, but a people willing to fight for their freedom will not be overcome. There is a time for peace and a time for war and this has nothing to do with preference. So help us to engage in the battle, whether that battle is economic, for the family, for life, or one fought by American soldiers in a foreign land. We pray for protection, for wisdom and that we may persevere. Lord have mercy on our state and on our nation. May we be now, as we began, one nation under God, indivisible, with Liberty and justice for all. - Amen

House Invocation

Rep. Fulton Sheen

March 11, 2008

Lord after a long winter full of ice and snow, we are looking forward to the spring.

We are looking forward to the warmth of the sun which will soon cause the trees to bud, the grass to green and the crops to produce a harvest.

In the same vein, the people and the families in our state have for many years experienced difficulty finding a job to provide for their loved ones. Our businesses and job providers have had trouble making ends meet, being competitive and simply staying in business.

We the elected Legislature and the citizens of Michigan, look to you, O Lord, for divine guidance and strategies on how to fix what is broken, repair our economy and make Michigan once again a wonderful place to live, work and raise a family.

Lord you know there are many agendas here in Lansing swirling and posturing for position and control. Some of these agendas are a sincere attempt to make things better, but too many others are self-serving or meaningless gestures and bills, which make it look like and sound like we are doing something, but in reality accomplish nothing.

Psalm 5:1-3

Give ear to my words, O Lord, consider my sighing. Listen to my cry for help, my King and my God for to you I pray.

In the morning, O Lord, you hear my voice; in the morning I lay my requests before you and wait in expectation.”

Lord I pray for mercy on our state and forgiveness for the poor choices we have made.

Lord raise up real leaders that have a heart for the people, not political figure heads who are only concerned about power and self promotion. Lord replace any prideful or foolish leadership, with wise and good leadership in our state.

Finally, I pray that as You shake all that can be shaken, that the elected officials and the people will stop relying on upon themselves, the economy, their job, and the government, and put their trust, hope, and reliance upon You. Lord give our elected officials and the people of Michigan eyes that see, ears that hear and a mind that comprehends the things of the Spirit. Give them wisdom, insight and the courage to do what needs to be done according to your will. In Jesus name I pray - AMEN
